ICL 1900 Series George 3 Operating System Commands

CARTRIDGE (CG)

Function

Informs GEORGE that the operator is about to move a cartridge which contains one or more filestore or swap residences from one drive to another. This will normally only be done when there is a transfer failure on the current drive, and when it is thought that the fault may be in the drive rather than in the cartridge.

Format

CARTRIDGE Unumber,Unumber

where both parameters are operator's unit numbers. One parameter must specify the drive on which is loaded the cartridge that contains a residence, and the other parameter specifies the drive to which the above cartridge is to be moved. Any cartridge on this second drive must not contain a residence. The order of the parameters is optional.

Forbidden contexts

NOT OPERATOR, REMOTE
This command is only allowed after GEORGE READY has been output.

Execution

After the command has been issued GEORGE will, if necessary, disengage the drives specified in the command. GEORGE then outputs the message:-

PLEASE LOAD CARTRIDGE z ON UNITn

at intervals governed by the value of the MESSAGETIME installation parameter. The operator should then load the cartridge containing the residence on the specified unit. When a disc is engaged on the specified unit it is checked and if it is the correct disc it is accepted and the CARTRIDGE command completes. An incorrect disc is disengaged with the message:-

UNIT n DISENGAGED: PLEASE LOAD CARTRIDGE z ON UNITn

GEORGE continues to output the PlEASE LOAD... message at the intervals specified by the MESSAGETIME installation parameter until the device is re-engaged. An operator unable to load the disc containing the residence on to the specified drive should type:-

    CANTDO LOAD CARTRIDGE z

and so cancel the CARTRIDGE command. The message:-

CARTRIDGE COMMAND CANCELLED: PLEASE RE-ENGAGE CARTRIDGE z ON UNIT n

is output and the transfers to the reidence are re-deirected to the original unit. The message:-

    UNIT n FIX

is output for the original unit until it is successfully re-engaged or an alternative CARTRIDGE command is issued

Notes

  1. From the issue of a valid CARTRIDGE command, GEORGE will not perform any transfer to either the old or new unit, and hence will usually be completely held up until the new unit is re-engaged and is found to have the moved cartridge
  2. If a residence is moved and GEORGE is not informed in advance by a CARTRIDGE command, the effect is undefined, and may be disastrous
