Performance Information

This page attempts to present some performance information across the entire 1900 range, either by providing original Ferranti-Packard, I.C.T. or I.C.L. data or from other sources.

The following table provides some excellent data regarding the West Gorton Machines, starting from the 1904A onwards. These files are scans of the sections of an ICL 4-ring maroon binder entitled "1900 Hardware Guide". This manual does not have a TP number.

Timeline (JH)   ICL-Timeline-John_Harper.jpg

Over the years we have created some of our own documents. Regarding performance the following may be of interest.

Document Description
instruction-timings-2.pdf
instruction-timings-2.xlsx
This document collates all of the instruction timings that are currently available os a PDF document and as the original Excel document. Anyone who can provide additions or corrections etc are asked to provide the updates so that we can correct the website.

Document Description
IM_25 A good I.C.T. document with timings for the 1904/5/9 machines
Not available A 3-volume set, created by the System Development Organisation (S.D.O.) for "Internal Use Only". This version is a partial version of the one below. We are unsure about whether or not we are allowed to publish it.

SDO_Manual(BWS)-s.pdf This manual, a complete copy of PDRM above, was found among a large collection of manuals that Brian had. Much of it is the same as the S.D.O. manual above, but with a good number of extras and updates. It was spread across four 2-ring (non-ICL) binders and somewhat 'foxed'. I think that they were donated to Brian  by Bernard Apps and also that Brian was somewhat unaware of their contents. Brian and I had discussed on a number of occasions the significance of the "Instruction Code Levels" applied to various processors. TP4999 told us about A, B and C, but did nothing to explain the optional 1 or 2 as a sub-level. This version of the S.D.O. manual in Part 0, Section 7, Pages 1 and 2 explain it.
